Post Op Shoulder Rehab: What to Expect
Shoulder surgery recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Structured, patient physiotherapy is what turns a good repair into a good result. Here is what each phase looks like.
Weeks 0 to 6: protect the repair
The tendon is at its weakest. Sling as prescribed, gentle passive range of motion within your surgeon's protocol, and elbow, wrist and hand exercises to keep the rest of the arm working.
Weeks 6 to 12: active movement
Progressive active range of motion, scapular control, and light activation of the rotator cuff. Range of motion should approach normal by the end of this phase for most protocols.
Weeks 12 to 20: strength
Progressive strengthening of the rotator cuff, scapular stabilisers and larger shoulder muscles. Return to most desk based work and daily activities during this phase.
Beyond 20 weeks: return to sport
Sport and overhead loading return gradually, guided by objective strength and functional criteria. Full return can take six to nine months depending on the repair and the sport.
