Post Knee Replacement Rehabilitation
The first six weeks after knee replacement surgery set the tone for the long term result. Consistency, sensible loading and expert guidance are what turn a good operation into a great outcome.
Week 1 to 2: swelling and movement
Focus on swelling control, quad activation, gentle knee bending and straightening, and safe walking with an assistive device. Home visit physiotherapy is often the easiest option in this phase.
Week 3 to 6: strength and confidence
Progressive strengthening of the quads, glutes and calves, stair training, longer walks, weaning off the assistive device. Range of motion should reach at least 110 degrees by end of this phase.
Week 6 to 12: functional loading
Squats, step ups, single leg balance work, exercise bike, walking on varied terrain. Return to driving usually happens somewhere in this window for a right sided replacement.
Beyond 12 weeks: long term maintenance
The knee continues to improve for a full year. Regular strength work, swimming, cycling and low impact activity keep the joint healthy and reduce the risk of stiffness returning.
