Home Physio After a Hip Replacement

14 June 2026 · By Nhlamulo Khosa, BSc Physiotherapy (UCT)

Getting to a clinic in the first weeks after a hip replacement is difficult and often unnecessary. Home visit physiotherapy removes that barrier, keeps rehab consistent, and lets us tailor everything to your actual home environment.

Why home physio matters early on

Right after hip surgery, transfers, stairs, bathrooms and bed height are the real challenges. Working on these in your actual environment is more meaningful than any clinic gym exercise could be.

What a typical home session covers

Wound and swelling check, range of motion, isometric and progressive strengthening, walking practice with the assistive device, and coaching on hip precautions where relevant.

Milestones we work toward

Independent transfers, safe stair climbing, walking longer distances without pain, and gradually reducing reliance on the walker or crutches. Most patients are on a single stick or unaided within four to six weeks.

Transition back to clinic

Once travel becomes easy, we switch to clinic based sessions for gym equipment, higher level strengthening and full functional loading through the twelve week mark and beyond.

If you're in Centurion or Midrand and want personal guidance, our physiotherapist offers same day appointments in clinic in Eco Park, Centurion, or at your home.
