Fall Prevention for Elderly Adults in Centurion

20 June 2026 · By Nhlamulo Khosa, BSc Physiotherapy (UCT)

Most falls in older adults are preventable. A short physiotherapy programme focused on balance, strength and home safety can dramatically reduce risk, and often adds years of independent living.

Why falls happen

Weakness in the legs and hips, reduced balance, poor eyesight, medication side effects and home hazards all combine. Address a few of these and fall risk drops sharply.

The three highest yield exercises

Sit to stand from a firm chair (strength), tandem stance and single leg balance (balance), and heel raises against a counter (calf strength). Ten minutes a day, most days, changes outcomes.

Home safety essentials

Remove loose rugs, add grab rails in the bathroom, improve lighting on stairs and hallways, keep pathways clear and choose supportive footwear over slippers. A home physiotherapy visit spots the risks a family often misses.

When to book a physiotherapy assessment

Any fall in the past six months, near misses, feeling unsteady on stairs, or reduced walking distances all warrant an assessment. It is also worth checking after any hospital admission or new medication.

If you're in Centurion or Midrand and want personal guidance, our physiotherapist offers same day appointments in clinic in Eco Park, Centurion, or at your home.
