Lower Back Pain in Centurion Office Workers
Long hours behind a laptop are one of the biggest drivers of lower back pain we treat at our Centurion physiotherapy clinic. The good news is that a few targeted changes at your desk, combined with a proper rehabilitation programme, can make a huge difference in days rather than months.
Why sitting all day hurts your back
Sitting itself is not evil, but sitting in the same position for eight or nine hours is. Held postures load the same spinal discs, ligaments and muscles continuously with no recovery. Blood flow drops, deep core muscles switch off, hip flexors shorten and the lumbar spine slowly stiffens. Add a laptop that is too low and the story writes itself.
The three cheapest desk fixes that actually work
First, raise your screen so the top edge is roughly at eye level. Use books if you have to. Second, move your keyboard forward so your elbows rest at ninety degrees close to your body. Third, set a timer to stand up every 30 to 45 minutes, even if it is just to walk to the kettle. These three changes alone unload the lumbar spine dramatically.
Three exercises we prescribe most often
Cat cows to restore spinal movement, glute bridges to wake up the buttock muscles that stabilise your pelvis, and hip flexor stretches to undo the effects of sitting. Two sets of ten repetitions of each, twice a day, is a realistic starting dose for most patients.
When to see a physiotherapist
See a physiotherapist if your back pain lasts more than two weeks, keeps returning, wakes you at night, spreads into a leg or is interfering with work. A proper assessment identifies whether the driver is muscular, joint related, disc related or a combination, and the treatment plan changes accordingly.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an MRI for lower back pain?+
Usually not. Most lower back pain is mechanical and resolves without imaging. We refer for scans only when we suspect something that would change the treatment plan.
Are standing desks the answer?+
They help, but the best position is your next one. Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day beats either one on its own.
Can physio treat a bulging disc?+
Yes. Most disc bulges respond very well to structured physiotherapy without surgery.
