Kids, Schoolbags and Back Pain in Centurion
Back pain is showing up younger and younger. Schoolbags, screen time and reduced play are all contributors. The good news is that most childhood back pain is preventable with a few simple habits.
Choosing the right schoolbag
Look for two wide, padded straps, a padded back panel and a hip belt for older children. The bag should sit above the pelvis, not sag down onto the buttocks.
How heavy is too heavy
A loaded schoolbag should not exceed roughly 10 to 15 percent of your child's body weight. If it feels heavy in your hand, it is likely too heavy on their back.
Packing the bag properly
Heaviest items closest to the spine, evenly balanced left and right. Encourage your child to remove books they do not need for the day rather than carrying everything.
When to see a physiotherapist
Any pain that lasts more than a week or two, pain that wakes your child at night, or pain accompanied by weight loss or fever needs assessment. Most cases are simple postural strain and respond very quickly.

Frequently asked questions
Are rolling bags better?+
They can be, but they are awkward on stairs and often make posture worse when carried. Well fitted backpacks usually win.
How much screen time is safe?+
Balance matters more than a specific number. Ensure regular movement breaks and outdoor play daily.
Do you treat children in Centurion?+
Yes. We regularly assess and treat school aged children for back, neck and sports related pain.
