Vertigo: How Physio Can Help
Some types of vertigo respond dramatically to a single physiotherapy session. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of them, and it is often overlooked.
What BPPV feels like
Sudden brief episodes of spinning triggered by rolling over in bed, looking up or bending forward. Each episode usually lasts under a minute but can be very distressing.
Why physiotherapy helps
BPPV is caused by tiny crystals dislodging into the wrong part of the inner ear. Specific repositioning manoeuvres, like the Epley manoeuvre, guide them back where they belong. Most patients feel dramatically better after one to three sessions.
Other causes we can help with
Cervicogenic dizziness from the upper neck, and post concussion dizziness, both respond well to targeted physiotherapy. Vestibular migraine and Meniere's disease need medical management first.
When to see a doctor first
Any dizziness with new headache, weakness, slurred speech, hearing loss or double vision needs urgent medical review before physiotherapy.

Frequently asked questions
How many sessions does BPPV usually need?+
Often just one to three. Some patients need one session with a short home programme.
Will I need scans?+
Not for classic BPPV. Scans come in when the presentation does not fit.
Can vertigo return?+
It can recur. If it does, another short course of physiotherapy usually resolves it quickly.
