Common Running Injuries in Centurion Runners
Whether you train around Centurion Golf Estate, along the Irene trails or on the Eco Park pavements, running injuries tend to follow familiar patterns. Understanding the top five will help you recognise trouble early and get back to running faster.
Patellofemoral pain (runner's knee)
Diffuse pain around or behind the kneecap, worse on stairs and downhill running. Usually driven by hip and quad weakness rather than the knee itself. Treatment focuses on load management and targeted strength work.
IT band syndrome
Sharp lateral knee pain, often at a predictable distance into a run. Common in runners who suddenly increase mileage or camber their running to one side of a road. Treatment combines hip strengthening, gait retraining and short term load reduction.
Achilles tendinopathy
Morning stiffness and pain at the back of the heel that eases with warm up and returns after activity. The tendon hates rest and hates too much load, so slow, progressive heel loading is the key.
Plantar fasciitis
Sharp pain under the heel with the first steps of the morning. Responds well to a combination of manual therapy, calf and foot loading, and short term footwear support.
Shin splints
Diffuse pain along the inner shin, often in runners who spike volume too quickly. Rest alone rarely fixes it. A structured return to running plan with strength work is what makes the difference.

Frequently asked questions
Should I keep running through pain?+
Mild discomfort that eases within a run and settles within 24 hours is usually fine. Anything worse or persistent needs assessment.
Do I need new shoes?+
Sometimes, but shoes are usually a smaller factor than training load, strength and running form.
How long before I can race again?+
Depends entirely on the injury. Minor cases: one to three weeks. Tendon injuries: two to three months of structured loading.
