The Home Office Setup a Physio Actually Recommends
Working from home does not have to mean daily neck pain. A cheap, sensible setup and a few good habits will beat the fanciest ergonomic chair in the world.
Screen height first
Top of the screen at roughly eye level, straight in front of you. Books, a laptop stand, or a spare monitor all work. This one change fixes more pain than any chair upgrade.
Chair basics
Feet flat on the floor, knees at ninety degrees, lower back supported. A rolled up towel behind the low back does the job of a lumbar roll for free.
Keyboard and mouse
Close to the body so your elbows can rest at your sides at about ninety degrees. Wrists straight, not bent up or sideways. Consider a compact external keyboard if you work off a laptop.
Movement breaks
Set a timer for every 30 to 45 minutes. Stand, roll shoulders, walk to the kettle, do ten squats or ten shoulder blade squeezes. Movement beats any single stretch.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a fancy ergonomic chair?+
Not if a normal chair plus a small lumbar support gets your posture right. Prioritise screen height first.
Is a laptop stand enough?+
Combined with an external keyboard and mouse, yes.
How often should I take breaks?+
Aim for a two to three minute movement break every 30 to 45 minutes.
