What Exercises Should You Avoid With Sciatica?
Avoid movements that repeatedly push symptoms further down the leg. Early on these often include aggressive hamstring stretching, heavy loaded bending, prolonged sitting and high impact activity. Most can be reintroduced gradually once symptoms centralise.
There is no universal blacklist for sciatica. There are, however, movements that commonly aggravate an irritated nerve root in the early stages, and knowing them saves weeks of frustration.
Commonly aggravating movements
Deep forward bending under load, heavy deadlifts and seated hamstring stretching all place tension on an already sensitive nerve. Long periods of sitting, especially in a slumped position or driving, are another frequent aggravator. High impact running early in a flare up can also increase symptoms.
Safer alternatives while you recover
Replace loaded bending with hip hinge patterns at light load or hip bridges. Replace static hamstring stretching with gentle nerve glides. Replace long drives with breaks every 30 to 45 minutes, and replace running with walking or cycling if those feel comfortable.
How to reintroduce them
Once symptoms have settled towards the back and buttock and are consistent day to day, reintroduce one activity at a time at reduced load. Judge the response over the following 24 hours before progressing further.
When to stop and get assessed
- Symptoms extending further down the leg.
- Foot weakness, numbness or difficulty lifting the toes.
When to see a physiotherapist
A physiotherapist can test which movements ease your symptoms and which provoke them, which makes the avoid list far shorter and more specific to you.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to gym with sciatica?+
Often yes, with modified exercise selection and load. Many people continue upper body and controlled lower body work throughout.
Is stretching my hamstring bad for sciatica?+
Aggressive hamstring stretching can provoke an irritated nerve. Gentle nerve gliding is usually better tolerated early on.
Should I avoid sitting completely?+
No, but break up long sitting periods and use a supportive position that keeps your symptoms settled.
When can I run again?+
Usually once leg symptoms have settled and walking is comfortable, then reintroduce running gradually with a walk run pattern.

Sciatica describes pain travelling along the sciatic nerve, usually from irritation of a nerve root in the lower back. Most cases improve over weeks with gradual movement, nerve mobility work and strengthening. Progressive weakness, numbness in the saddle area or loss of bladder control require urgent medical attention.

Use the centralisation rule: exercises that move symptoms out of the leg and closer to the back are usually helping, and exercises that push symptoms further down the leg should be stopped or modified.

Most back pain is mechanical, meaning it comes from the joints, discs and muscles of the spine rather than a serious disease. Gentle movement, gradual strengthening and a return to normal activity usually help more than rest. If pain lasts longer than two weeks, keeps returning or travels down the leg, a physiotherapy assessment can identify the cause and guide the right exercises.
