Do I Need a Doctor's Referral to See a Physiotherapist?

Quick answer

No. In South Africa physiotherapists are first-contact practitioners, so you can book directly without a referral. Some medical aid benefits or hospital authorisations may ask for one, so check your plan if you're claiming.

Many people wait for a GP appointment before seeing a physio. For most muscle, joint and injury problems, you can come straight to us and save time.

When to come directly

Back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint stiffness, post-surgery rehab once you're discharged, posture problems and headaches linked to the neck.

When a referral helps

If your medical aid requires one for a specific benefit, after surgery when your surgeon has a protocol, or for medico-legal work. If we find signs that need a doctor, we refer you on.

What to bring

Your ID, medical aid card, any scans or reports, a list of medication, and loose clothing so we can assess the area.

Frequently asked questions

Will you tell me if I need a doctor?+

Yes. Screening for problems that need medical care is part of every assessment.

Can my GP still be kept informed?+

Absolutely. With your consent we can send a report to your doctor.
